Support Groups
Why Attend a Support Group Meeting?
The purpose of a support group is sharing with and supporting one another for the mutual benefit of the total group. Some essential elements of a support group are:
- active, involved listening to others;
- sensing that others care and that you are being heard;
- meeting and accepting your needs;
- receiving and giving an opportunity for others to be really understood;
- an awareness of common needs and strengths;
- a place to find courage and to take risks;
- providing an atmosphere with an opportunity to get in touch with yourself; and
- positive and negative views can be expressed without being judged or labeled.
