decoration How common is brain injury?

Brain injuries can happen to anyone.

Every year, about 1.4 million people in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). While most of these injuries happen to children, adolescents, young adults, and people over the age of 75, the highest risk group is males ages 14 to 24.

Of the 1.4 million annual TBI cases in the United States

  • 1.1 million are treated in emergency departments
  • 235,000 are hospitalized for a TBI
  • 50,000 die as a result of a TBI

In Arizona*

  • 27,575 were treated for a TBI in emergency departments
  • 5,995 were hospitalized for a TBI
  • 1,375 died as a result of a TBI

Currently, 5.3 million Americans are living with a long-term TBI-related disability. Of those, 45,000 are Arizona residents. What we don't know is the number of TBI cases treated in doctor's offices, other outpatient facilities, at home, or not treated at all.
